Leerhsen for setting me straight and for ripping the “veil of enigma” from Dan’s story in the kindest possible way. But in “ Crazy Good” both the social and racing history are so absorbing that they risk obscuring the impeccible, meticulous research of the author. I’m not really a fan of non-fiction about famous horses (or people) for a number of reasons I won’t go into here. In fact, sports writers whose sterling reputations preceded them, notably John Hervey, had great difficulty in representing that brilliance, that “something” that placed Dan Patch in the ethereal, making him seem more deity than horse.īefore we begin, I wanted to acknowledge Charles Leerhsen for his brilliant book, “ Crazy Good: The True Story of Dan Patch, the Most Famous Horse in America.” And I do mean “brilliant.” This is a book that takes you on the most fascinating journey ever - into Dan’s world as it was at the turn of the last century. The whole “phenomena” of Dan Patch was as much the creation of his owners, trainers and the world in which he lived, as it was the story of a horse so brilliant that he was almost beyond human comprehension. But Dan’s life was so romanticized that ploughing through it all amounts to wading into the fraught waters where enigma reigns supreme. ![]() He is, of course, beloved to a nation and to the sport of harness racing. The story of Dan Patch is such a case in point. But when a horse is part legend and part enigma - and where the latter takes concrete form in publications, movies and an ocean of promotional material - even an experienced researcher can easily take the wrong turn and end up simply perpetuating the fiction. The issue that always confronts a researcher is the necessity of discerning fact from fiction. ![]() ![]() ![]() Samsung reserves the right to make changes to this web page and the contents herein, including without limitation, functionality, features, specifications, GUI, images, videos, benefits, design, pricing, components, performance, availability, capabilities and any other product information, without notice. *All specifications and descriptions provided herein may be different from the actual specifications and descriptions of the product. In his defence, Bieber is a longtime fan of the low-rise jean, wearing logoed Calvin Kleins with shameless visibility for several years, for once suggesting this is case of product following placement. Furthermore, it’s unlikely the brand would actively choose to be seen promoting or courting controversy. His recent dance with controversy, which saw him charged with assault and dangerous driving, might neatly echo the narrative of proto-Bieber, Mark Wahlberg, who had several drug and assault offences to his name by the time he appeared in his Calvin Klein boxers in 1992, but that’s where the similarity ends. To wit, former models Antonio Sabàto Jr, Australian Travis Fimmel (who reportedly became the first male model to earn six figures for a single campaign) and Jamie Dornan pre-The Fall, alongside rapper Marky Mark (Mark Wahlberg, who appeared with Kate Moss), actor Djimon Hounsou and footballer Freddie Ljungberg, the latter appearing in one of the brand’s most successful campaigns to date.Įxtremely famous and deeply uncool, Bieber is in neither camp. Short of selling tampons, Bieber has successfully endorsed everything, from bags and dolls to shower curtains and acne cream, earning an estimated $58m last year. But as with Kim Kardashian and her ilk, we know there’s no link between saturation point and selling power.īieber’s immeasurable popularity, born on YouTube and nurtured at an impressive rate by social media, has seen him become more of a brand than a singer. This might seem sad or misguided: historically, Calvin Klein’s underwear models scream cool, whereas last year, Forbes declared Bieber one of the most overexposed celebrities in the world. Justin Bieber is part of the star-studded Calvin Klein Spring 2020 campaign, and he strips down to just boxer briefs in the latest ad. This suggests that the adverts are aimed either at girls with both a disposable income and a desire to turn their boyfriends into Biebers, or boys who either want to look like Bieber (unlikely) and/or please their girlfriends. We know that Bieber’s audience is primarily pre-teen and teenage girls. ![]() ![]() ![]() From Data Collection, choose the service you want to monitor. ![]() Apps will need to provide logs that can be shipped via the familiar Linux Syslog server, running on a VM with an agent that forwards logs to your Azure Sentinel workspace.įor Azure services, the process is a lot easier. Once the service is up and running, your next task is configuring connections to services, apps, and machines. You can have multiple workspaces in an account, but each workspace is isolated. You’ll need to add a workspace, which is where all the data associated with your subscription will be stored. Once that’s up and running, you can enable Azure Sentinel from the Azure Portal. First add a Log Analytics workspace to your Azure account. One of the key elements of Azure Sentinel is Azure Monitor, a component of Azure’s application monitoring platform. The security graph alone currently processes millions of signals a day, working across all of Microsoft’s cloud-hosted platforms to develop models of how attacks progress - even when they may be slow advanced persistent threats, where actions are normally hidden in the noise of a busy data centre’s operations. Perhaps Azure Sentinel’s biggest advantage is its support for Microsoft’s security graph, as well as proven tooling inside Azure that’s part of Microsoft’s own security analytics platform. By building on cloud-scale data collection, and on Microsoft’s own threat detection tools, Azure Sentinel can automate response using orchestration across your entire estate. Working across on-premises and in-cloud infrastructure, it’s intended to be easy to set up, low maintenance, and easy to use. Microsoft recently launched Azure Sentinel, its approach to modern SIEM. Someone has the information that’s needed to secure your applications, but in many cases that isn’t you - it’s someone in the hyperscale cloud’s network operations centre. However, there’s a problem when it comes to cloud infrastructures: you may not have full visibility into all the elements of your environment, especially if you’re building on top of service and platform elements. In a complex threat environment, modern data centres need a SIEM to operate effectively, sat next to your application and network monitoring tools and helping manage your response to incidents and warnings. Security Information and Event Management, SIEM, is a rapidly growing part of the enterprise security market, building and delivering smart security dashboards that analyse and prioritise these messages, using a mix of log file analysis and machine learning.
